What is an Impact Producer?

Impact producers collaborate with filmmakers, partners, and the community to design and implement an impact campaign strategy. They often have a background in the issue being addressed by the film and/or in advocacy, strategic partnerships, and community organizing. Many work independently, while others are a member of a team at an agency that specializes in impact producing.

What is an Impact Producer?

The Global Impact Producers Alliance (GIPA) defines an impact producer as "someone who is interested in the topic of the film and through a thoughtful collaboration with the film team and community is responsible for designing and implementing a strategic plan for the impact campaign."

In the Guide to Best Practices in Documentary Crediting, the Documentary Producers Alliance defines an impact producer as follows:

The Impact Producer is responsible for maximizing a film’s potential for social change. Responsibilities may vary based on the film’s content and defined distribution goals, but often include strategy development, issue mapping, brain trust facilitation, organizational partnership development and management, digital content production and engagement, and evaluation and impact measurement. An Impact Producer may also coordinate and/or oversee a film’s semi-theatrical screening campaign and release. The Impact Producer may also play a role in story development and fundraising, beginning as early as pre-production.
